What Is PEX AL PEX Pipe?
PEX AL PEX pipe-also known as aluminum-reinforced PEX or multi-layer PEX-is a composite tubing constructed from three layers:
Inner layer: Cross-linked polyethylene (PEX), which directly contacts water and provides corrosion resistance and flexibility.
Middle layer: A thin aluminum core, which adds rigidity, dimensional stability, and oxygen barrier properties.
Outer layer: Another PEX layer, offering protection against external damage, UV radiation, and mechanical stress.
This layered structure is bonded together using advanced adhesives or thermal fusion, creating a unified pipe that inherits the best qualities of both materials: PEX's flexibility and chemical resistance, and aluminum's strength and shape retention.

How PEX AL PEX Pipe Works
The multi-layer design of PEX AL PEX pipe delivers distinct functional advantages that set it apart from single-material pipes:
1. Oxygen Barrier Protection
The aluminum core acts as an effective oxygen barrier, preventing oxygen from permeating the pipe walls and entering the water system. This is critical for closed-loop systems (e.g., radiant heating) or systems with metal components (e.g., boilers, pumps), as oxygen can cause corrosion and scale buildup in metal parts over time.
2. Enhanced Rigidity and Shape Retention
While traditional PEX is highly flexible, it can expand or sag under high pressure or temperature. The aluminum layer in PEX AL PEX adds rigidity, maintaining the pipe's shape even in high-temperature (up to 200°F/93°C) or high-pressure (up to 160 psi) applications. This stability reduces the risk of kinking or deformation during installation or use.
3. Improved Impact and UV Resistance
The outer PEX layer shields the aluminum core from physical damage (e.g., abrasion from construction materials) and UV radiation, making PEX AL PEX suitable for both indoor and protected outdoor installations (e.g., under-slab or in crawl spaces).
Types of IFAN PEX AL PEX Pipe for Water Systems
PEX AL PEX pipes are categorized based on their PEX type and aluminum layer design, each optimized for specific applications:
1. PEX-A AL PEX-A
Structure: Inner and outer layers made from PEX-A (highest cross-linking density, ~85-90%), with an aluminum core.
Properties: Exceptional flexibility and kink resistance, even after bending. The aluminum layer ensures rigidity without sacrificing maneuverability.
Best for: Hot and cold water distribution in residential and commercial buildings, radiant floor heating, and retrofits requiring tight bends.
2. PEX-B AL PEX-B
Structure: Inner and outer layers of PEX-B (moderate cross-linking, ~65-70%), paired with an aluminum core.
Properties: Stiffer than PEX-A AL PEX-A but more cost-effective. Offers reliable performance in standard pressure and temperature ranges.
Best for: General-purpose water supply lines, cold water systems, and low-to-medium pressure hot water applications in budget-conscious projects.
3. Oxygen Barrier (OB) vs. Non-Barrier PEX AL PEX
Oxygen Barrier (OB): Most common type, featuring an aluminum core that blocks oxygen diffusion. Ideal for closed systems (e.g., radiant heating, hydronic systems) with metal components.
Non-Barrier: Designed for open systems (e.g., potable water supply) where oxygen ingress is not a concern. The aluminum layer still provides rigidity but does not include enhanced oxygen-blocking adhesives.
