How to Install PEX Pipe
Installing PEX pipe is a straightforward process that offers flexibility and durability for plumbing systems. With the right preparation and techniques, homeowners and professionals can achieve reliable, leak-free results. Follow this guide to ensure proper installation.
Pre-Installation Preparation
Start by planning the pipe route based on your plumbing layout. Measure the required lengths carefully, adding a small buffer for bends and connections. Gather essential tools: PEX cutters (for clean cuts), crimp or clamp tools (depending on your fitting type), a deburring tool, and a measuring tape. Ensure all materials, including PEX pipe, fittings, and fasteners, match the system's pressure and temperature requirements.
Cutting and Preparing PEX Pipe
Cut the PEX pipe to your measured lengths using sharp PEX cutters, ensuring straight, even edges. Use a deburring tool to remove any burrs from the inside and outside of the cut ends-this prevents damage to O-rings in fittings and ensures proper sealing. Mark the pipe near the end to indicate how far it should insert into fittings (typically 1/2 to 3/4 inch, depending on size).
Making Connections
Slide a crimp ring or clamp over the pipe end before inserting the fitting. Push the fitting fully into the pipe until it reaches the marked line-ensure it seats squarely. Position the crimp tool over the ring or clamp, aligning it 1/8 inch from the fitting's edge. Squeeze the tool firmly until it releases, creating a tight seal. For push-fit fittings, simply insert the prepared pipe end until it clicks into place. Always test connections with a quick tug to confirm they're secure.
Securing and Testing the System
Secure the PEX pipe to walls, joists, or studs using PEX hangers or clips, spacing them every 3–4 feet for horizontal runs and 1–2 feet for vertical runs. Avoid over-tightening hangers, as PEX needs room to expand with temperature changes. Once all connections are made, turn on the water supply slowly and check for leaks. Let the system run for 10–15 minutes, inspecting all joints closely.
By following these steps, you can install PEX pipe efficiently, creating a durable plumbing system that withstands daily use and temperature fluctuations.
