Downsides of PEX Piping: Key Limitations to Consider
While PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) is popular for plumbing, it has some drawbacks compared to copper, CPVC, or other materials. Here are the main disadvantages:
1. UV Sensitivity
Problem: PEX degrades when exposed to sunlight (UV rays).
Effect: Becomes brittle and cracks after 6–12 months of direct exposure.
Fix: Use only for indoor/underground applications, or shield with UV-resistant paint.
2. Chemical Vulnerability
Problem: Can be damaged by:
Chlorine (in municipal water) – Weakens PEX-B/C over time.
Petroleum-based products (oils, solvents).
Effect: Reduced lifespan (from 50+ years to 20–30 years in harsh conditions).
Fix: Use PEX-A (more chlorine-resistant) or install a whole-house filter.
3. Rodent & Pest Risk
Problem: Mice/rats may chew through PEX (unlike copper or steel).
Effect: Leaks in walls or crawl spaces.
Fix: Wrap pipes in metal mesh or use rodent-deterrent sprays.
4. Expansion/Contraction Issues
Problem: Expands 3x more than copper when heated.
Effect: Can cause "water hammer" noise or stress on fittings.
Fix: Add expansion loops or use PEX-AL-PEX (more stable).
5. Fitting Compatibility Challenges
Problem: Requires specific tools/connectors (crimp rings, expansion sleeves).
Effect: Higher upfront cost vs. glue-on PVC/CPVC.
Fix: Rent tools or hire a pro for complex installations.
6. Environmental Concerns
Problem: Not as recyclable as copper (some PEX contains BHT antioxidants).
Effect: Landfill waste if improperly disposed.
Fix: Choose PEX-A (fewer additives) or reuse cutoffs for small repairs.
7. Permeability to Oxygen
Problem: Standard PEX allows oxygen diffusion in heating systems.
Effect: Corrodes boilers/radiators over time.

8. Temperature Limitations

PEX-A: 200°F (93°C)
PEX-B/C: 180°F (82°C)
