What is the downside to using PEX?
While PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) is a popular choice for modern plumbing, it has several important limitations that users must acknowledge before installation.
1. Vulnerability to UV Radiation
Issue: PEX degrades rapidly when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light from sunlight.
Impact: Outdoor or sun-exposed installations can reduce lifespan from 50+ years to just months.
Solution: Must be shielded with opaque covers or installed indoors/underground.
2. Poor Rodent Resistance
Issue: Mice, rats, and other pests can chew through PEX pipes.
Impact: Significant risk in attics, crawl spaces, or regions with rodent infestations.
Solution: Use metal sleeving or run PEX through PVC conduit in high-risk areas.
3. Chemical Permeability and Sensitivity
Issue: PEX can be permeated or degraded by:
Petroleum products (gasoline, motor oil)
Certain pesticides in soil
Very high chlorine levels (>4 ppm) in water
Impact: Risky in industrial areas or contaminated soils.
Solution: Test soil/water conditions; choose CPVC for chemical resistance.
4. Oxygen Permeation (Standard PEX)
Issue: Standard PEX allows oxygen to diffuse into water.
Impact: In closed-loop heating systems, oxygen corrodes boilers, radiators, and metal components.
Solution: Use oxygen-barrier PEX (PEX-AL-PEX or EVOH-coated) for heating systems.
5. Connection Reliability Depends on Installation Quality
Issue: System integrity relies heavily on fitting quality and installer skill.
Impact: Poor crimping, incorrect tool use, or incomplete tube insertion causes leaks.
Solution: Require professional installation with calibrated tools.
6. Environmental Concerns
Issue: PEX is difficult to recycle; most recycling centers do not accept it.
Impact: Less sustainable than fully recyclable copper pipes over their lifecycle.
Solution: Select manufacturers with environmental initiatives; hope for improved recycling tech.
7. Temperature Limitations
Issue: While PEX handles typical hot water (e.g., 90°C), prolonged exposure to higher temperatures (e.g., steam from boiler failure) causes permanent damage.
Impact: Unsuitable for high-temperature industrial applications.
Solution: Use CPVC or metal pipes for high-heat scenarios.
